Well it's kinda like s4 of Buffy in that way, Spike wise. That the writers wrote Spike as a stand in for Cordelia. So more snarky and funny, rather than as a dramatic character. It's only when they moved on from that, that they let them see the character as himself, rather than as a a replacement for a particular trope.
