I've just wasted way too much time on http://actualteenadultteen.tumblr.com/ lol, they put together a picture of an actor playing 16 or 17 alongside a picture of what they actually looked like when they were were that age. It's so weird to see Hollywood's example of what passes for teenage in tv and film

I always thought Sarah and Alyson passed okay actually (well Sarah was only 2 or 3 years older than the part anyway), but Nicky and Charisma were ridiculously obvious when they were both close to 30 and still playing 16/17 wtf. And Joss did hire an actual teenager for the part of Kendra unusually, but Bianca Lawson is 31 in the second pic and still playing a teenager...

I always heard they don't like to hire actors who are younger than 18 because of the child labour laws. They ran into problems with Claire Danes on My So-Called Life because she was only 14/15 in reality, and so they added in more scenes with the parents instead to give her a break. She was actually only13 when she filmed the pilot, which was the same age as the actress playing her little sister Danielle was at the end of the series! That always weirds me out!

And the actress playing Maria on Roswell was only 17 when she auditioned, she told them that she was 18 and then there was a huge fuss made when FOX found out her real age apparently and she was totally blacklisted until she wrote the all these letters explaining that she would be 18 by the time they filmed the pilot and her age wouldn't be an issue when it came to the hours they could work her for

Still, there's a lot of room between 18 and 28, lol. They could have 18 or or 19 years olds playing teens, instead of people in their upper 20s playing teens.

Very true lol. I always wonder what they're thinking when they hire someone who is obviously that much older. Paul Wesley is 30 and he never looked even lose to the 17 his character is supposed to eternally be, you'd think they would at least only look at actors who were no older than idk 22 for that part. It looks so weird with actors like Paul Wesley or Tom Welling when you have them in a school setting at their age

I think the problem is that half the time when they do go with kids playing kids, people start criticizing them. (imo often without reason)

It's rare to find a series with young actors where reviewers won't start talking about how bad the younger actors are compared to the older ones.

Game of Thrones being an exception. They really lucked out with their youngsters.

Personally I think that the kid playing Carl on the Walking Dead, or the boy playing Henry on Once Upon a Time, are pretty good as well, especially since all the other actors they're in scenes with are adults. And then you come online and see people hating on both their chars and the kid's acting. Often unwarranted.

It seems that reviewers are often inclined to think negative of younger actors, whether it's actually deserved or not.
