I'm not sure. I tend to the opinion that the creator has the right to say "This is canon," regardless of changes in storytelling methods, but from a reader's POV, some canon is more equal than others. For example, is the movie canon? Buffy did burn down the gym according to TV canon, but did she really run away with Pike? And there's the fact that four million people a week, or whatever it was, saw the TV show; only a few thousand of those will be aware of the comic, much less read it. So if I use Comic canon in a fic, will most of my readers accept it as canon, or even realize it's canon?

Right. Well also Joss and ME always seemed very into allowing the viewer to take away the interpretation that they like. So Buffy's official story ending in Chosen, works for me in that way. Whether Joss want to then write a comic on how he think it would have continued or not, ultimately I don't include that as part of my tv viewing experience with Buffy
I mean writers involved with the show (Jane Espenson, Doug Petrie) have written Buffy comics, but did they count as canon for the tv show?
Actually, some of them did. I only know this, because I own a few of them. I mean, they weren't the exact storyline, but they were written close enough to fit the time-frame. I have one on Dru&Spike, and then a few others.
I can't remember if it's that one or another one. But, I know that I at least have one of them and I think one of Spike himself. ;)
And I know I have one on Cordelia and one of Willow "set during Bargainings", because it's a picture of her from the episode on the cover - or well artwork depicting that era and time frame.
