I've seen the 1945 version a bunch of times, and it's a good movie, but yeah, it does cop out on the ending and leave Phillip and Vera alive and in love, LOL. I haven't seen the new BBC adaptation yet, but I really should. The book was one of my favorites when I was a teenager.
