Well not entirely sure if I should be panicking right now or not, but I've set up a Dreamwodth account just in case anyway. Apparently you no longer need an invite to join!

I'm currently importing my LJ over there, but I still have zero plans to leave LJ. I would just hate to lose all of my content without warning, not to mention all of the people that I have friended over here, so I figured that it doesn't hurt to create that backup if the worst-case scenario does ever come to pass. I don't think the censorship concerns would affect me as I'm not all that political on here quite honestly, my main worry is that the site might go under for good without warning one day, I've been reading that it's apparently no longer all that profitable outside of the Russian user base

This is probably very shallow in light of all the censorship concerns, but I still just don't want to leave LJ. Frankly I would be sad to leave my permanent account to start all over again on another site with a tiny icon allowance and other silly little annoyances like that...Still if the LJ servers do ever go down for good then I would want to continue blogging, so I guess that Dreamwidth is where I'll be in that case...

I have done the same but staying here on LJ.

Yep I've definitely got no plans to leave, I'm mostly panicking now about how unprepared I would be if I woke up one morning and LJ was down for good. At least this way I'll know that there's somewhere else I can re-connect with my lj friends, and that my entries will still exist on another platform. I've been on LJ for 13 years now, so it would be a real shame to lose all of that content

I know what you mean. Hell, I haven't updated my personal LJ for years, but I check my friends list religiously and would be gutted if it all went away. I too have a Dreamwidth as some sort of backup (I'm the same username as here), but I've yet to use it.

It really would feel like the end of an era if we ever lost LJ, but I suppose that it most likely has to happen one day :( It doesn't sound too good to me right now in terms of the incentive that the Russian owners have to keep it going, especially if a lot of the Russian user base is apparently now moving to DW

I'm doing the same thing--importing to DW, but staying here.

I wouldn't want to lose LJ either. There are just so many memories here, and it's such a valuable fannish archive. Sigh.

Yeah I know that LJ is a bit of a ghost-town these days, but it's still reasonably active enough that I would hate to lose it. Even if DW did end up experiencing a temporary boast through LJ shutting down for good, I still don't see it ever really taking off idk, I feel like a lot of users would just give up at that point and it would never really be the same

I'm just praying that five years from now we're not all doomed to tumblr and twitter as the only remaining fannish platforms!

So apparently we have gone from 'OMG,the russians are spying on us' to 'LJ is going to die' in the matter of one day. I haven't heard anything about LJ possibly dying tho? Where did you get that from?

Date: 2016-12-31 01:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
It's probably mostly paranoia on everyone's part, I was just reading that apparently they make no profit from the English user base any more, so if the Russian users end up being driven away then there's a high probability that LJ might be shut down on account of no longer being profitable enough. I've held off on creating a DW account for years now, but I decided today that it never hurts to be prepared for any eventuality, because really LJ still being around five years from now is by no means a sure thing sadly :(

Ah, interesting. You want to use DW as a backup. I just want a back up. I've never posted to DW and it looks so clean and pristine. I can't start over with another system.

I always wondered if it would just go dark one day. Like MegaUpload and Grooveshark. Poof! Above all, it's my journal and I'd want to reread it someday. So I'd like to save it somewhere. Maybe I'll figure that out this weekend.

People on my flist were really panicking yesterday, but yeah I'm hoping that it's all just an overreaction. They usually take no interest in their non-Russian user base, so I can't see that changing all that much frankly. I did read somewhere else that the Russian owners actually already brought the servers to Russia in 2009??

Yeah I really don't want to leave LJ, for a start I like having a permanent account with access to extra icons and other perks. DW would be starting over on a completely different platform, I'd have a free account with only 15 icons, I'd have a smaller flist (oh sorry, 'subscribers list') etc. It's never been as simple for me as saying that oh let's all go to DW, it's just swapping one platform for another more fandom-friendly one, when no there's some pretty big changes that go along with that

I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy it was, if you go to this page you only need to enter your LJ username and password, and then it does it all for you. It brought pretty much everything over from my LJ (tags, memories, profile etc), it's only my icons that are missing

Hopefully it's something that we'll never be forced to switch over too, but it's reassuring to know that it's there

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Surely it makes financial sense for a Russian company to move information to their own country rather than rent space in another country? There are loads of Russian Lj users so I can't see them shutting the whole thing down overnight.

I'm going to back up to DW as I already have an account there which I don't use, but I shall stay here with my permanent account. It makes sense to back up, but I'm going to do it after all the fuss has died down as last time it kept not working as it was so overloaded and I like looking back on my entries (I use Lj very much like a paper diary).

I exported to Dreamwidth the last time there were rumours of LJ problems (or maybe the time before the last time...) and I've been crossposting ever since, but I still consider LJ to be my primary home and would hate to lose it. Even though LJ is quiet these days I don't have the same network of friends over on DW and don't really want to start over

Hopefully it's just a rumour and will come to nothing

LJ is definitely still my fandom home, I've always found that it's never really the same whenever a community or forum closes down and is forced to move, so I fear that would be the case if LJ ever did collapse and we tried to all start over again on DW. Once a community is gone, it's hard to get the same feel back elsewhere :(

Honestly, the Russians-will-close-LJ panic has been going on for years now and it still hasn't happened. I think it's genuinely scary for the Russian LJers; they don't really seem to give a shit about English LJers.

But I backed up just in case.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I saw someone else mention that some servers have been in Russia for a while, which makes sense, and now they're moving them all. Depending on the rental agreements it all makes perfect sense, being at the end of the year and how things are slower online at Christmas.

It's been so long since there's been a good, proper LJ panic that it's just nostalgic for me at this point!

Yeah it seemed like everyone on my flist started posting about it at the same time, so I had a kneejerk "should I be worried", but eh LJ has been owned by a Russian company for years now? I can't see that this will make all that much difference to English language based fandom anyway, they don't seem to have any interest in that part of their user base

Thanks for the info. Do you know, if you import LJ over to DW, what happens to the setting on entries? IE, would a friends-locked entry on LJ be visible to all on DW? Thanks.

I was a bit worried about that too, but it seemed to copy them all over *exactly* as they were on LJ, the protected entries are still protected the same on DW. Pretty much the only real difference was my icons not showing up and the video links not working on DW, otherwise my profile, tags, flock, comments, memories etc are all the same

Yeah a few more people have now left LJ to cross-post from DW, but otherwise most of the community is still here, so I don't really see the point in moving even if I did like it more over there. It does make for a good safeguard though
