frelling_tralk: (VD Katherine by icon_reich)

“The one big theme that we’ve never confronted head on is the idea of redemption in terms of it being a tangible need for our characters,” Plec says. “This season really deals with the theme of good vs. evil. Can you recover from the mistakes that you’ve made, can you make amends for the pain you’ve inflicted on others, is there hope for you or are you doomed to be punished for all eternity? We don’t really deal in specifics of heaven and hell on this show but we have always talked about peace, and we’ve never really explored what the opposite of peace might be...The ‘she’ in quotes is a fascinating entity because we start the season and no one knows what it is, our evil, how it works, what it wants. And part of the mystery of the first episode is actually trying to identify the villain,” Plec says. “Once we do and ‘it’ becomes ‘she,’ then she’s going to have a whole story of her own moving forward that is going to tie into all these things that we’ve been talking about".

Am I completely deluding myself, or does all this scream Katherine as the big new female villain that the cast have been confidently talking about being the best yet?! Katherine's final moments of being dragged off to hell would certainly tie in perfectly with that theme of what the opposite of heaven and peace might be

Also everyone seems surprisingly cagey about whether Nina is coming back or not, even though it was always talked about as a certainty before that Nina would 100% want to come back for the finale, and yet suddenly everyone involved doesn't want to say if they can work out the logistics or not? Could that be because Nina will be recurring as Katherine throughout the season, and they're trying to keep it as a surprise for the fans? And also Kevin Williamson has spoken in an interview recently about the season 1 finale twist with Katherine being his favourite that he's ever done, so I can really see everyone involved being excited to introduce a similar twist for their last ever season premiere...

Am I just kidding myself, or does this seem like a strong possibility to anyone else?

I thought she might be Katherine too, although I dismissed it as I thought that would mean Nina having to be back. However, now you come to mention it, has there been any casting spoilers for this 'she'? Usually they announce new cast members early on but I am out of touch these days.

I first started wondering if it could be Katherine after Comic Con when Candice and Kat were really talking up how great the new female villain was going to be, how she was their favourite yet. Realistically it seems like it would be hard for a brand-new villain like that to top *all* of their past ones and be the best ever, the casts excitement there makes a lot more sense if they were bringing back an old favourite that they know that the fans are definitely going to totally embrace, and that there's already an emotional connection too. The show has always been into emotional reasonance with their villains, so again it seems odd to talk up a 'brand-new' villain as the best yet over past favourites like Katherine and Klaus

And now this interview has almost convinced me that it's really happening! I can see Nina not wanting to come back to play Elena for a number of episodes (although I do think she will definitely want to bring Elena back for the finale), but playing Katherine post-hell would be the sort of new challenge that I could really see her being up for, especially if it was an arc as the villain that's threaded throughout the season and mostly just requires a few scenes here and there. It's not the same commitment as bringing Elena back for a long-term arc would be

And I don't think there have been any casting news yet, which seems unusual when they normally always have casting announcements before the start of the new season! I'm really getting my hopes up now XD

I hope you aren't disappointed then! Bringing back Katherine would tie the show arc up nicely.

And with Kevin Williamson back as well (and all of the titles referring to season 1 quotes), bringing Katherine back to torment Damon again would certainly bring everything full-circle, and it all seems to fit with how secretive everyone involved has been over this new female villain

I'll be disappointed if we don't get any Katherine in the final moments, I was always hoping that they could bring her back in the final episode for a different ending, but I figured that if Nina does come back for the finale then it would naturally be mostly centred on Elena. But having Katherine as recurring throughout the season would be the perfect way to end things on a strong note villain-wise, as well as bring closure to both characters in the end. The final season is only 16 episodes, it wraps up early next year, so it wouldn't need to be a huge commitment for Nina, especially if they do some block shooting for Katherine's scenes and spread them out. She's always seemed so close with the cast and crew of TVD too, that I could see her agreeing to come back if they laid out a really intriguing arc for Katherine for her to play as a 'special guest star'

I thought they already confirmed that Nathalie Kelley will play that "big new female villain"? I mean, I might have mixed something up but i thought when she was announced that she was announced as exactly that...

Aww, really? :( Dammit I must have missed that, I thought that the new villain was still being kept pretty mysterious. I was really getting my hopes up for Katherine to be the one tormenting Damon, everything that Julie says in this interview about the theme being to focus on what the opposite of peace does to a person would seem to fit perfectly with Katherine's fate

Oh well, I hope they'll at least manage to squeeze in some kind of appearance for Katherine in the finale anyway, I don't want the last image of her to be the one of her being dragged off to hell...

As much as I would love for this to be true, I'm not holding my breath (and from the looks of things, it doesn't seem likely, sadly).

I agree, it seems appropriately fitting for the theme, but then again TVD isn't always consistent with itself anyway, and it just sounds too good to be true for it to actually happen the way we wish it did. I just think they did Katherine really dirty and she deserves better. /forever bitter

Yeah it's looking like I was getting a bit too carried away with my spec lol, although you never know, an appearance from Katherine could still happen! It still strikes me as odd how cagey everyone is suddenly being about whether Nina will even be back for the finale, so I'm remaining hopeful that they may have one or two cool surprises that they're keeping quiet about

And absolutely, obviously Katherine was no saint, but it's such bullshit that she's the one character that we saw dragged off to hell, not to mention being blamed for every last one of Damon's sins. I would hate for the show to just leave that as her characters fate, especially after she did somewhat redeem herself in the end with Nadia. If Damon and Klaus get happy endings, then Katherine deserves no less!

I'll be very disappointed if Katherine isn't somehow involved in this season. She was always my favorite TVD character.

Same, I really loved her character, especially the arc with her struggling to adjust to becoming human again :) She was way more than just a one-dimensional villain, and she should have got a better ending than she did

It would seem to fit if they're going to get into what hell and eternal damnation does to a person

At this point, I'm just hoping this final season is better than the last. It deserves a proper send off.

I really enjoyed the premiere, so that's a positive sign at least, it seems to be going back to its horror roots

I'm finally caught up (I bought S7 back in September) and I watched the start of S8. I was kind of hoping it would be Katherine, but it appears to be a new player. I thought it was Rayna for a moment.

I did have a mad moment of hoping that it really was Katherine at the end for a moment there when we just saw her body climbing up, but alas! She should be an interesting villain still I guess, the cast have been hyping her up so much that hopefully that's a good sign
