‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special Teaser

The Stephen Moffat-scripted 60-minute special, titled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” will see Peter Capaldi’s titular Time Lord teaming up with a superhero to save New York City from a deadly alien threat. Shameless and Orphan Black actor Justin Chatwin takes on the role of the caped crusader Doctor Mysterio, with Wolf Hall star Charity Wakefield joining the duo on their quest as an investigative journalist. Matt Lucas, who first debuted as River Song’s assistant Nardole in last year’s Christmas special “The Husbands of River Song” will also return for the episode.

It looks like it should be fun? The only drawback for me is that I found Matt Lucas quite irritating in the last Xmas special, so I'm not thrilled that he's going to be playing a bigger role in the show, but I'm guessing that I'm in the minority there...

Oh and there's also a trailer out now for the new spin-off Class, anyone else planning on checking it out? :)

I'm hoping it turns out to be a worthy spin-off :)

I'm probably looking forward to Class more than Doctor Who at the moment - I usually find the Christmas specials a bit meh.

I found Matt Lucas' character quite annoying too so could have done without him returning. Mind you, I also found Donna irritating in the Runaway Bride but loved her when she returned, so maybe they will surprise me!

I know what you mean about the Xmas specials, I usually get more into the long-term arcs and the character development that you get in a season, rather than the one-off episodes. Moffat's last two efforts were pretty great though IMO, so hopefully this one will be worth a watch

Not so sure about this Christmas special thing, but Class looks quite fun. I know my friends twelve year old is looking forward to it.

The trailer certainly makes it look quite promising!

Oh, looking forward to all things DW, as ever! I'm very intrigued by Class - the DW team did a great job with SJA, Patrick Ness is a multiple award winning and very intriguing YA author, and last time Steven Moffat made a teen show, it was Press Gang, which still must be best YA show ever, even twenty years on. It's a rare thing to get a show solely aimed at that older teen audience anyway, so more power to their elbow, regardless of what I or any other adult thinks of it. Get it right, and something like that can really have an impact.

The Christmas one looks very meta, which could be a lot of fun! I don't know why anyone had to bring Matt Lucas back in, but I've enjoyed the Christmas specials that played up the humour (Runaway Bride, Husbands of River Song) much better than most of the rest anyway.

I've read one of Patrick Ness's books and really enjoyed it, so hopefully that's a good sign that this new series of his will grab me as well

And I loved both Husbands Of River Song and Last Christmas, so hopefully this special will live up to those episodes for me, but I must admit that I wish that Matt Lucas's character could have been kept as a one-off appearance. (I'd rather they bring Strax back for the comic relief personally, it's been too long since we've caught up with the paternoster gang!)

Yes, more Strax for comic relief, that would be much better! Oh, well - I suppose he wasn't in it that much last time, maybe he will improve. *crosses fingers*

Still, they should both be interesting - and hopefully good!

I did read somewhere that he's going to be in most of the new series though, so I'm not too thrilled about that at the moment :(

I'm so excited! I mean I don't care about the plot of either but I really like what Capaldi is wearing so yeah.

I thought the idea of Class seemed ridiculous at first—most depictions of school feel incredibly unrealistic to me—but the trailer made it look fun. I don't know, I'd still prefer a Vastra and Jenny spinoff.

Yeah I wasn't that excited for Class originally (I must admit that I never watched The Sarah-Jane Adventures, the spin-offs aimed at younger viewers have never appealed to me much), but the trailer really makes it look worth a watch

It may shock you, but Sarah Jane Adventures was actually way better than Torchwood, and in some ways, even more mature storywise.

Hmm maybe I should give it a try sometime then, I just always got the impression that it was very CBBC

Well it was intended for children. But they had some truly excellent writers, and dealt with some deep storylines.

I've skipped the DW trailer (since I already know I'll be watching it), but I've checked the Class one and it looks great. I'm excited! :D

The Christmas episodes are usually fun, and I'm really looking forward to Class!

(I agree with Matt Lucas' characters being very irritating. So we'll see how that goes...

Yeah he was okay in small doses I suppose, but I really don't want him hanging around for too much of the new series and the Xmas special, his voice is so grating. Personally I'd rather see more of Jenny, Vastra, and Strax for the comic relief

I am looking forward to it in anticipation.

I dropped Shameless seasons ago, but I will not complain about seeing Justin Chatwin again!

This is somehow the first I've heard of this Class phenomenon?????? I'll reserve judgment...

Oh really, it's been in the works for a while now? I think they've been discussing it since last year.

I'd normally be a bit cynical about another DW spin-off/cash-grab, but the fact that Patrick Ness is involved has me hopeful that we'll be getting something worth watching

I don't normally care for the Xmas specials, although last year's was good. But that's only because I <3 River and it wasn't very Xmasy.

As far as class I have been pretty skeptical about it, but the trailer looked interesting enough I will probably give it a few episodes and see how it goes.

It's sad, but for the first time since 2005 I'm pretty 'Meh' about most things Doctor Who.

I haven't loved all of them, the very Christmassy ones usually feel a bit too cheesy and ~family-friendly~ to me lol. I was really impressed with Last Christmas though, and the one with River Song was good too definitely

You weren't a big fan of series 8 and 9 then I take it?

I see promise in 12, but I feel like they have tried to hard to make things family friendly with an older Doctor. It's like they said 'the kids won't relate to this old guy- unless we make it goofy!". I prefer the light/dark swings that 9 and 11 brought to the table. It seems like they made everything a bit lighter. Even "heaven sent" which was darker than the rest didn't have the same sort of gravitas. It was WONDERFUL and the only episode of the year that I enjoyed greatly. But it lacked something for me.

I am seriously not sure what to think of this... or if I should even be excited... I'm gonna miss Clara SO so much and all, but I love Peter Capaldi, so I'll at least take a look!
