Exactly. They just accepted him without question because...Elena and Stefan liked him? I mean, I could understand them not killing him for Stefan and Elena's sake, but why did they automatically work with him whenever trouble came to town? Prior to season 6, he didn't care about protecting anyone but Stefan and Elena. Which worked out since it was usually Elena that the bad guys were after but still...He was automatically part of the group even though the majority of them still don't like him.
Yes, I liked what they did with Matt last season and how they've always kept up his fear/distrust/hatred of vampires that aren't his friends. It'll be interesting to see how he handles the upcoming war with the Heretics. He can side with the humans all he wants but Caroline is one of his closest friends and she's a vampire so I don't think he's ever going to be able to write vampires off completely.
Yeah I don't know how they are going to deal with Damon without Elena's influence. I mean, I guess quite a few of them like him now? There's Stefan, Bonnie, Alaric and Enzo if they continue that friendship. So even if Matt and Caroline still don't like him, the majority of the group now does. Benefits of getting rid of so many characters, I guess :)
