The roots of this go back decades, and every one of them has put his own little pebble towards making it worse and more certain. A few hundred politicians swinging from lammposts on Whitehall and Parliament Square - each with a journalist and a big business banker to keep him or her company - would be a good start to the job of straightening this country out.
