PETER CAPALDI IS LEAVING DOCTOR WHO

I was really hoping that we would get at least one season of his Doctor with Chris Chibnall as showunner, but it's now been confirmed by Peter that he's leaving after Christmas 2017 :(

I'm legit sad. I guess at least there's one more season with him, but he's srsly my sunshine.

Same, given what a massive fan of the show he's always been, I was really hopeful that he would end up staying for a few more years than has been the norm for modern DW :sniffs: It seems like everyone feels obliged to leave after three years these days though, to avoid being seen as outstaying their welcome

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that. Wasn't Baker on for like seven years?

My only hope is that this means Malcolm Tucker can show up on Veep. Even if it's a guest appearance, it would make me happy.

Honestly I wonder if he felt obliged to bow out so that Chris Chibnal could start off with his own choice of Doctor, and the same completely fresh slate that Russell Davis and Steven Moffat got? Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the feeling that he would have stuck around for another year otherwise if it was still Moffat in charge, three years really isn't that long at all considering he's acknowledged that being Doctor Who is his dream job

That seems likely to be the case. Or he got offered some ridiculously great role (which iirc is why he left Musketeers) but I can't imagine what would be a bigger deal than DW for him.

Same here... I was hoping for him to have at least a good run since he's such a fanboy!!! Poor him :(

Exactly! I really hoped that he would want to stay playing the Doctor for at least five or six years as it's been such a lifelong dream of his. I can see why Matt and David wouldn't want to hang around for too many years when they're still trying to establish their careers, but I was hoping that Peter might stick around at least a year or so longer than the norm. Three years really isn't all that long to play a character when you think about it, but it seems to have become the accepted time for DW actors now :sighs:

Ugh, I was hoping he would stick around to see how well Chris would take over. Damn Moffatt ruining something else.

I was definitely looking forward to seeing his Doctor under Chris Chibnall, and all the comments on that last year made it really seem likely that he would be sticking around for at least that long :(

I'm still warming up to his version of the Doctor. I think he makes a great stage actor but I dunno. I think it was more the relationship he had written with Clara I wasnt for. So I'm waiting to see if his new companion Bill makes me a bigger fan. He is such a lovely man.

I thought he'd stay longer since he is such a big fan of Doctor Who.

Well honestly just last year he was talking about wanting to stay around for a long time, so I'm half-wondering if something happened since then that make him feel pressured to leave before he was pushed so to speak, but who knows

Yeah, maybe. Or maybe it was ageism. Like the person who posted it in ONTD said. Maybe because Peter is older. I don't know.

There has been a lot of spec in the press that having an older Doctor could be why the ratings have fallen :(

No, FUCK!
I am now really sad about that... but at least we get one more season. I love him as an actor and think he was great.

Well, if I don't like the "new" doctor, I might have to stop watching again... :/

Me too! I loved his Doctor, and it feels like it's hardly been any time at all since the 50th when Matt was playing the Doctor. It really looked like Peter was one actor that might want to stick around as long as Tom Baker did, but it looks like three years is all we get from each Doctor now :(

I wonder if it's something coming from within the BBC about it being best to switch things up around that time, because it was similar with Amy and Clara both spending around 2 and a half years in the role, so maybe there's just a general feeling in the writers room that there's not a lot more to say about a character after that length of time/time for a reboot, I think that Karen said as much?

I'm already mourning.

At least we get a full season of Twelve and Bill, which I am very curious about.

I'm definitely excited to see him with Bill, I wonder if she's going to stick around for Chris Chibnall's era, or if they will want to do what Moffat did when it comes to starting over with a completely fresh slate?

Sad, of course, but not really surprising. Three years plus a couple of extra specials is a decent Doctor's run, and it allows Chris Chibnall to start with a relatively blank slate. But, aww, he's been great! <3

Honestly I was pretty taken-aback, from everything that was said last year I got the feeling that Peter would be very happy to stay for another year with Chris Chibnall, I remember comments from him last year about how he hoped that it would be a long way off before he stopped being recognisably the Doctor to the general public. Given what a huge fan of the show he is, I was really expecting him to be the first new series Doctor to stick around for an extra year or so,

I suppose that it does make sense that they would want to start Chibnall's era off with the same completely fresh relaunch of the show that Moffat got with series 5 though, I can't help feeling like he would have stayed a bit longer if Moffat wasn't leaving as well :(

how he hoped that it would be a long way off before he stopped being recognisably the Doctor to the general public.

Ah, but that's a very different thing compared to staying in the role itself! And he's enough of a fan to know that an overlong stay isn't necessarily a good thing for the actor or the show. I've been hearing rumours that he's leaving for a while.

But it will be sad - he's been lovely! But, hey, here comes our next Doctor...

I would have liked to have had at least one season with him working with Chibnall, but oh well :sigh: It will be interesting to see whoever is cast as the new Doctor definitely

I'm not surprised, they all seem to stick to 3 seasons these days. I'm curious about who will follow. :-)

It does seem to have become the norm these days. I can imagine the next actor really second-guessing themselves now lol if they want to make it four years, because isn't it the expected thing to bow out after threee *g* I am excited to see who the next Doctor is going to be :)

I'm disappointed too, though 3 years does seem to be the norm these days. I feel like I haven't really got to know him get (mind you, I felt that way when Matt Smith announced he was leaving too!). I must admit I haven't really warmed to his Doctor, and also I feel that the writing hasn't been as good for him as for Moffat's previous Doctors so I was hoping to get a series with Chibnall and see if that made all the difference for me.

Wonder if it's partly budgetary - wth the BBC increasingly strapped for cash maybe they need to cast someone fairly unknown and therefore cheaper?

It really never feels that long to me either, you're only just adjusting to them no longer being ~the new Doctor~ in their second season, and then you hear that one more year and they'll be gone! I'd prefer a five year run personally, but that's probably a bit unrealistic

And I am wondering if it could be something like that, there's been so much talk of the ratings not being what they were that I can't help suspecting that the BBC would be interested in going for someone a bit younger and sexier for the younger viewers. It will be interesting to see who they cast next
